Your legal rights

The Freedom of Information Act, 2000 gives you the legal right to ask to see information that we produce. The Act says that we must:

Deal with requests for information and queries promptly;
Advise and assist you with making requests for information; and
Help you understand any information we provide.

We will inform you about the information we publish and say whether it is available through our Publication Scheme.

If the information you want is not in our Publication Scheme, you can contact us to find out if it is available. Just tell us what you are looking for and what format you want it in. If you're not sure, just let us know so that we can advice you. We may need to ask you a few questions to make sure we give you exactly what you want. You do not have to tell us why you want the information.

If we have the information, we will send you a copy within 20 working days (four weeks).

Where possible, we will provide it in the format you require, such as in another language, audiotape, Braille, by email or on CD.

If we don't have the information we'll let you know as soon as possible and tell you, if we can, where else you might find it.

There may be some information we cannot give you. This includes ‘specific exemptions’ which might damage our commercial interests and third party information about others that would be a breach of data protection. We will also not release confidential information about the organisation, such as details about our employees.

When we cannot provide the information you have requested, we will tell you why.

Normally information will be made available through our website so it is free. When we charge fees for photocopying and sending large amounts of information, they will be reasonable.
