Why form a group?

There are a wide range of methods in which tenants and residents can get involved. One way is to set up a tenants and residents group. A group may come into existence to campaign around a particular issue, to improve local facilities and services or to create a community spirit. Groups are made up of local volunteers who operate in a defined street, block or area. They get involved in a variety of activities such as:

  • Campaigning on local and/or national issues
  • Local regeneration
  • Environmental, safety and art projects
  • Fundraising
  • Social events / activities
  • Training

Having a tenants and residents group means that you have a collective voice on local issues to help target problems and suggest solutions. The more people that get involved with a group, the stronger its voice is. Groups also play an important role in helping the Six Town Housing to consult with tenants and to help shape and challenge housing policy.

We provide support to all groups, including annual grants to recognised, constituted groups to help run their group effectively. As a constituted group, you can also have access to a variety of other funding opportunities. Groups who would like to expand their activities to address such wider community issues as crime and safety, youth provision and environmental improvements can apply for external grants from various organisations for community projects or equipment. Some examples of projects are:

  • Developing / transforming an unused, littered piece of land into a vibrant community garden
  • Holding a community clean-up & fun day
  • Fitting extra home security measures for vulnerable residents
  • Purchasing a computer, available for community use and IT training
