Greener and cleaner
Date: Monday 7th September, 2009
St Thomas Estate Tenants and Residents Association held a successful estate clean-up and planting session on in August 2009. Two large skips were placed at each end of the estate and members of the community swept and cleaned the grot-spots and goody bags were given to all the children who took part.
Some younger members of the community arrived very early and helped residents carry their rubbish to the skips. They also collected numerous bags of litter that had been strewn around the estate.
Running alongside this was a planting session open to all the community to come and chose a pot and some flowers and plant their own to take home. Pots were also taken to elderly residents who were unable to attend.
An elderly member of the community said “it’s great to see everyone working together to improve our estate”.
Funding for the event came from Six Town Housing's community "Grab-a-Grant" fund.
The Chairperson Anthony Heydon commented “Our estate suffers from flytipping and constant littering, so it was really good to be able to get the community to get involved with cleaning up their estate and taking ownership of their area. It also brought together all sections of the community”
