Disabled adaptations

How to request an adaptation

Disabled adaptations are delivered through Bury Council’s Home Improvement Agency provided via Six Town Housing.

The first point of contact if you think that you need an adaptation is Disability Services, who can be contacted on 0161 253 6858. They will carry out an initial telephone assessment to see if you meet the Fair Access to Care criteria for an Assessment of Need. It is at this point that they will tell you how long you will have to wait for an Assessment of Need.

If you do not meet the criteria for an Assessment of Need you can contact the Home Improvement Agency directly on 0161 686 8200. They may be able to provide a minor adaptation that may be of benefit to you, but please be aware that they do not carry out an assessment of your need.

If you do meet the criteria for an Assessment of Need you will either be visited by a Disability Officer who will carry out the assessment in your own home, or you will be invited to attend an Assessment Clinic held at the Seedfield Centre. This will depend on the information you provide during the course of the telephone assessment.

Once the Assessment of Need has been carried out the Disability Officer will make recommendations about what Aids or Adaptations will meet your need.

It is at this point that you will be referred to the Home Improvement Agency (HIA) team.

What to expect from the HIA

You will be contacted within three days of the HIA receiving your referral.

You will then be visited by a Disabled Facilities Officer at a time convenient to you, who will carry out a site survey and discuss the Disability Officers recommendation with you.

Depending on the work identified the HIA will draw up a schedule of work and arrange for contractors to visit so that they can tender for the work identified.

The winning tender will be awarded to the contractor submitting the lowest quote. In some cases, for example in the case of level access showers, work is awarded using a pricing matrix rather than tenders being sought.

The Disabled Facilities Officer will instruct any contractors carrying out work and will supervise the work until it has been completed to everyone’s satisfaction.

You will then be sent a questionnaire to ask you to comment on the adaptations process from beginning to end.

It is important that we have this feedback to ensure that we can continually improve our services to meet the needs and aspirations of our customers.
