Housing Benefit is an allowance which you can claim towards your rent. If you qualify, you will have a lower rent to pay each week, or sometimes none at all. The amount of Housing Benefit you get depends on your family circumstances, such as numbers and ages of children, if anyone is disabled or should be helping towards the rent and how much you earn or claim in benefits.

Housing benefit is paid directly into your rent account. For example, if the rent for your home is £50 a week, and you are entitled to £30 housing benefit, you pay only £20 a week yourself
