Abandoned Cars

image - abandoned car

Abandoned cars can make an estate look run down and uncared for so we need to get rid of them as soon as possible. While our housing staff are out on their estates frequently we also rely on members of the public to let us know when there is a problem.

If you report an abandoned car to us we will first establish if the vehicle shows signs of being abandoned – this could include being told that the vehicle has not been used for a period of time, there is no tax disc, and perhaps there may be broken windows or parts missing from the vehicle. Once we are satisfied that the vehicle appears abandoned, we will report it to the Council’s Highways Department.

The Council’s Highways Department will deal with the removal of the vehicle under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978. To do this a notice is placed on the vehicle requesting the owners or user to remove the vehicle within 24 hours if it is a wreck, or within 7 days for all other vehicles. If the owner or user fails to remove the vehicle by the timescale recorded in the letter, we will arrange removal and disposal.

If you wish to report an abandoned car to us please do so by contacting us.
