Rent arrears from a previous tenancy

If you used to be a Council tenant and you owe rent arrears, you are still expected to pay us what you owe. These arrears are known as ‘former tenant arrears’.

If you do not make an arrangement to pay off these arrears or do not keep to the agreement we make with you, we will refer the debt to a debt collection agency. We may not offer you accommodation in the future if you do not pay. We may also try to recover the debt through the County Court. If we do this, your credit rating will be affected and you will incur additional costs.
