Manchester Credit Union are proud to have been associated with the staff and tenants of Six Town Housing for 9 years. We have built a strong working relationship and are delighted that we have been able to help many people in Bury by providing them with savings and affordable loans.
Whilst we work with a large number of people at Six Town Housing, we are grateful to be given the opportunity in this blog to remind staff and tenants about our services.
Savings
Once you open a savings account with us, you can save as much as you like and as often as you wish. You can pay money into your savings account by standing order, at a Pay point or at a Post Office. You can also pay into it directly if you receive child benefit or tax credits. If you are employed and your company is one of our Beesmart payroll partners, you can have your savings deducted directly from your salary on payday and transferred to us so we can place the money into your account. Your savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and you will also receive free life savings insurance where your savings are doubled up to a maximum of £5000 and paid to a nominated beneficiary.
Loans
We know that there are loan sharks operating in Bury but we would like to encourage tenants to come and talk to us before they speak to a loan shark or a payday/doorstep lender as our loan rates are far more competitive and we can save you money.

Please have a look at the loan calculator on the home page of our website to give you an indication of how much our loans cost. You can borrow any sum from £150 to £15,000 at a fair, affordable rate. There are no application fees and, if you pay your loan off early, there are no early repayment charges unlike other providers.
You can apply for a loan for most purposes, but we would like to draw attention to some of our products which may be of interest to you. We have a Family Loan where, if you are in receipt of child benefit, you can have a loan of £500 with no credit check. You arrange to have the child benefit paid to us and we will take out the repayment for the loan, pay a small amount into a savings account for you and transfer the remainder to you. You may also be interested in our Lifestyle Loan where you can borrow up to £5,000 to pay for home or garden improvements.
If you have a poor credit history or even no credit history, it can be difficult if you are trying to get a loan. However, that doesn’t mean we cannot help you. As a responsible lender we will carry out a credit and affordability check to ensure that you can make the repayments. We will look at your outgoings to decide if you can afford to pay the loan repayment alongside your other financial commitments.
We have a different way of approving loans compared to the process that banks and building societies use which means we may be more likely to approve your application. All loan applications are reviewed by a member of staff, not a computer program and decisions are made based on your recent credit history and ability to repay the amount you borrow. Even if you have had a debt problem in the past, we may be able to approve the loan if you can provide evidence that you are trying to resolve previous debts and that it is affordable for you.
In order to help you understand what we consider before we give approval to a loan application please see below:
- We will not lend for business purposes or a mortgage application
- We will not lend to an individual who then lends on to a third party
- We will check your credit file in most instances to understand if the loan repayments are affordable
- We will ask to see your bank statements to identify any unpaid items which may be a sign you are struggling to afford existing financial commitments
- We will not be able to approve a loan if you are currently subject to an Individual Voluntary Arrangement, Debt Relief Order, Bankruptcy Order, Debt Management plan or similar
- In most circumstances. we will not consider lending if you have applied for a loan with us and have been declined in the last 6 months
As a responsible lender, we will never knowingly put you in a worse financial position by offering you a loan that could cause you financial hardship. If, after our review of your circumstances we decline your loan application, we will contact you to explain why.
