Six Town Housing and Sure Group have teamed up to launch their first electric vehicle to be used for gas servicing across 8,000 homes in Bury.

Sure Group work in very close partnership with Six Town Housing in regards to creating environmental sustainability and the introduction of a zero emissions electric vehicle was the natural choice. The Renault Kangoo Z.E. will be used by qualified engineer Daryl Shaw on a daily basis, while a charging point has been fitted at his home address to allow overnight charging.

The Renault Kangoo Z.E. electric vans use zero emissions whilst driving and offer ultra-low running costs from just 2p per mile and a full charge from just £1.31. A full charge of 8 hours allow the Renault Kangoo Z.E to travel up to 106 miles. This gives an approximate cost saving of £9.00 per day while safe guarding the local environment.

Phil Spinks, Fleet Manager said: “The introduction of electric vehicles to our fleet was the obvious choice because of its ecological and sustainable qualities, whilst also protecting our local environment and reducing our carbon footprint. At Sure Group we take our green agenda seriously and this is just one of number of initiatives introduced to reduce emissions.”

Hugh Broadbent, Chairman of Six Town Housing said:

"The new van will reduce both noise and air pollution, complementing our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint by training staff in energy efficiency and working to make our homes greener. It will also be cheaper to run, so we can put what we save into making further improvements to tenant services."

“Cutting contributions to greenhouse gases also ensures we are aligned with Bury Council's commitment to being a 'green' borough.”

This is not the first step taken by both companies to create a greener future. Six Town Housing is rolling out Low Carbon training to all staff, work with Groundwork to deliver 'Green Doctor' home energy visits and are installing energy friendly Air Source Heating systems in homes. They have also installed solar power systems at homes in Whitefield and at the Red Bank extra care scheme in Bury.

The Sure Group team is committed to making continuous improvements to the CO2 emissions of over 250 vehicles. With more than 35% of vans having already been changed to smaller diesel engines, 20 cars having green credentials, the integration of the 5 new electric vehicles and the existing low emissions smart cars, Sure Group are well and truly on the road to success.
