Find out more here: Six Town Housing Update

Are you on Universal Credit? Don’t miss out on what you are owed by making sure you update any increase to your rent on your Universal Credit Journal.

You will receive a letter from Six Town Housing each year (in March) that states if your rent is due to change. When your rent increases, it is important that you update this in your Universal Credit Journal yourself or the benefits you receive won’t increase to cover the new amount.

In 2020 and 2021, some tenants on Universal Credit fell into rent arrears as they did not realise they needed to do this themselves. They then experienced delays when trying to claim a back-payment to get the amount they were entitled to.

If you hear that your rent has increased this year, here is what you need to do.

1. Sign in to your Universal Credit account online from the date your rent amount has increased. This date will be included in your letter.

2. In your To-Do list, you will be able to report changes to your housing costs. Amongst other questions you should be asked:

“Did your housing costs change on... (the date in your letter)?” Select Yes
“Are you still charged weekly for your rent?” Select Yes
“How much is your new rent per week? (Do not include any service charges or rent arrears).” Enter the amount on the enclosed letter
“Are you still charged weekly for your service charges?” Select Yes
“How much are your new eligible service charges per week?” Enter the amount from this letter if you pay service charges.

Tenants on Housing Benefit

Please note that if you receive Housing Benefit instead of Universal Credit your benefit will be automatically updated and you do not need to do anything.
