What is a TRA?

Tenant and Resident Associations (TRAs) are made up of people that volunteer their time to make positive changes in their area. This short video includes interviews with several volunteers about the kind of things they do.

Why should I get involved?

Are you passionate about where you live? Then why not join your local TRA to:

● Share ideas and influence decisions about services and improvements to homes or the environment

● Attend and help organise social events and clubs (including Youth Clubs, activity sessions, clean up days and more), which can be a great way to get to know your neighbours and improve the vibrancy of where you live

● Work with the TRA to bid for funding to make improvements to your community

● Gain fantastic work experience and a sense of satisfaction through volunteering

Meet people and make a difference in your local community in Bury by joining a Tenant and Resident Association

“Since our community have come together to tackle local problems, we have seen marked improvements on our estate. Our committee gets together at our lively and friendly meetings to address any issues, organise community events and to make our estate an enjoyable place to live. My neighbours are now new friends and we have a strong community spirit which we intend to keep.”

How to start a tenants group

We help groups get off the ground and give full support along the way. A starter pack has also been produced which provides a useful guide on how to set up and run a new group. It includes handy tips and information for existing groups too. The starter pack is currently being updated so please contact us for help and guidance.

Funding

Six Town Housing has a limited amount of community funding that can be bid for. Please note that it is for TRAs and Action Groups of STH tenants only. Download the guidance notes for the funding here and the application form here.

Constitutions

All TRAs are required to have a constitution. A constitution is a basic set of rules that TRAs must have to be recognised and to apply for funding. It covers the aims of a group and gives guidance on how a group will operate. Help will be given to new groups to develop a constitution. Click here to view our model constitution.
